Fate of Makueni County Government to be known today as commission presents report to President Uhuru

The fate of Makueni County Government is set to be known Thursday when a commission appointed to recommend if it should be dissolved presents a report to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Commission of Inquiry into the petition to suspend the Makueni County Government is set to hand over its report to the president at State House in Mombasa today.

Chairman Mohammed Nyaoga led his team to Mombasa Thursday morning ahead of the meeting with the president.

The commission determined the grounds raised by the Makueni electorate who petitioned for the county government’s dissolution.

The president appointed the Commission of Inquiry vide Gazette Notice Number 1557 of 10th March 2015 to inquire into the petition and investigate the allegations raised against the county government.

The Commission conducted public hearings and received information from various experts on the way forward.

If it finds the grounds strong enough as per Article 192 of the Constitution, then it will recommend dissolution of the county government and report the same to the president.

The petitioners had argued that Members of the County Assembly are corrupt and are making it difficult for the county government to operate.

Should the six-member commission uphold the allegations against the troubled Makueni county government, and the same position agreed upon by the President and Senate, then the county government will become the first under the new constitutional dispensation to be suspended and placed under an Interim County Management.

Before setting up the commission, President Kenyatta had urged Makueni residents and the county government to explore all avenues of reconciliation.

Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana had however stated that all attempts at peace had failed and the people of Makueni should be given an opportunity to elect a county government of their choice.
