Top Fry Nakuru RFC are the new Prinsloo Sevens champions.

Nakuru achieved the feat after beating stubborn Homeboyz 7-5 in a tough final match at Nakuru Athletics Club, yesterday.

The victory increased their chances of wrestling the National Sevens Circuit title, having reached the finals of Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa last weekend where they fell to Mwamba RFC.

Yesterday, Nakuru RFC were in a class of their own, taking a 7-0 lead in the first half from a classic touch down by Geoffrey Ominde who later made the conversion but Oscar Ayodi reduced the deficit with a try to make it 7-5 as both teams exhibited brilliant shows in the second half.

Nakuru RFC Coach Gibson Weru welcomed the victory and pointed out that it was not given on a silver platter.

“It was not easy to win the cup. All this can be attributed to hard work and it has increased our chances in the chase for the National Sevens Circuit title,” Weru told reporters in a post-match interview.

Homeboyz tactician Paul Murunga, who admitted his charges made some mistakes early in the match, is now focusing on the last leg of the tournament in Kabeberi Sevens to be hosted in Nairobi at the Rugby Union of East Africa grounds this weekend.

Enroute to the finals, Nakuru RFC dispatched Kabras RFC 15-12 in the quarters before defeating Strathmore Leos 26-19 in the semis, while Homeboyz had dismissed Kenya Harlequin 24-19 in the quarters before smashing Impala 26-5 in the semis.

Other quarter final matches saw Kenya Commercial Bank lose 10-17 to Leos as Impala overcame Mwamba 7-5.

Leos later won the play-offs 19-17 over Impala Saracens.

After failing the test in the Main Cup, Kabras RFC dropped to the less prestigious Plate competition where they won the title after beating Kenya Harlequin 28-12 in the finals. Earlier, they hit KCB 17-5 in the semis as Harlequin clobbered Mwamba 21-17 in the other match.

In the Bowl finals, Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad stunned Western Bulls 12-5 to wrestle the title.

Bernard Kibet and Polycap Mbae each touched down once for the winners with Kibet earning a conversion while Eliab Baraza replied for the losers.

Earlier, Blak Blad had hammered Kisii RFC 20-0 in the semis as Western Bulls walloped Nondies 12-7.

In the Shield finals, Catholic Monks earned a 19-17 win against Makueni RFC to win the title.

Monks had silenced Mount Kenya University, Thika 29-5 in the semis with Makueni hitting Kisumu RFC 15-0.
