Four in 10 elderly Kenyans too poor to stop working, new survey shows

Over 40 per cent of Kenyans cannot afford to retire and have to continue working, a new survey shows. A report released by pension company Alexander Forbes suggests that another 40 per cent will have to rely on family for support.

The Deposit Administration Survey, which paints a sorry state of the country’s ability to take care of its elderly population says that only 5 per cent of Kenyans are expected to be financially independent in retirement and even fewer will live comfortably.
