GSU officer commits suicide in Kapedo, Baringo

Baringo: A police officer attached to Kapedo General Service Unit security operation camp shot himself in what the authorities suspect to be suicide.

The officer used his official firearm to end his life on Wednesday night.

He was among hundreds of security officers deployed along the Baringo-Turkana border after the killing of 21 Administration Police officers in Kapedo last year.

Rift Valley Regional Co-ordinator Osman Warfa said the officer was mentally disturbed.

"It is unfortunate we had to lose the officer, but investigations are underway to establish what transpired," he said.

In May, officers involved in an operation to disarm bandits and cattle rustlers in the volatile North Rift sensationally claimed they were going for days without food and water.
