Nairobi, Kenya: Two police officers are among six suspects arrested and more than Sh3 million recovered following a robbery on a mall in Easleigh, Nairobi.

Police said the Administration Policeman and a General Service Unit officer, were arrested after a robbery was staged on United Mall and several stalls broken into on Tuesday night. A cutter was recovered at the scene.

Starehe OCPD Bernard Nyakwaka said the officers were traced to their camps at Ruaraka GSU camp and Security of Government Buildings (SGB) camp respectively after investigations.

According to Nyakwaka, Sh1.8 million in Kenya Shillings and US$17,275 were recovered from the suspects.

“The team investigating the matter also recovered more than a thousand grammes of gold that we believe was stolen from the malls during the burglary,” he said.

Those arrested were being interrogated on Thursday before they appear in court.

They were identified as constable Mohamed Kanyare Billow of GSU and Administration Police constable Kahiya Mohamed Omar.

Starehe DCIO Kiberenge Seronei said the suspects will face various charges  in court once investigations are complete.

Chairman of Eastleigh business community Ibrahim Hussein said several malls have been broken into in the area in the past six months.

“This is a breakthrough into these attacks that have been ongoing in the last six months where we lost property and cash worth millions of shillings,” said Hussein.

He added that they have been reporting the matter to police but there was no arrest or recovery made.

Hussein led his colleagues to Pangani Police Station where they pressed police to ensure all those mentioned in the attacks are arrested.

Last week, three GSU officers were arrested while trying to extort Sh300,000 from a businessman in Nairobi.

Two other officers attached to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit were later arrested while ferrying 80 Ethiopian immigrants on a lorry.

They have all been charged in court with various counts.
