Governor Samuel Tunai cleared of corruption allegations

Narok County Governor Samuel Tunai has been cleared of any corruption allegations.

This comes after the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko accepted recommendations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) exonerating the governor from any corrupt deals.

Mr Tobiko had ordered for the inquiry into alleged human resource, financial and procurement irregularities by the governor.

EACC conducted the investigations and recommended the closure of files for lack of evidence of criminal culpability.

On Friday, Tobiko accepted recommendations to close files on the three allegations; Mara triangle revenue collection, hire of helicopter, and procurement of Kenya Airports Parking Services (Kaps) Ltd, for lack of evidence.

"Having reviewed the evidence in the resubmitted file, I concur with EACC that there is no sufficient evidence to support allegations," Tobiko said.

On June 10, DPP had also accepted the commission's recommendation over five other allegations facing Tunai and two senior county officials.

EACC investigations into allegations of Tunai's directorship in Mara conservancy together with his brother, Ole Kijabe, revealed that the governor and his sibling resigned from the positions before the 2013 General Election.

Another allegation concerning the employment of Charles Gitau as County Finance Officer was also dismissed after the commission's inquiry found that Mr Gitau had been hired by the Transitional Authority.

Other allegations investigated included procurement of legal services, Oloololo game ranch gate collections and the creation of Mara Trust Fund.

The commission found that the procurement of legal services was properly done, and Sh52 million paid was commensurate to services rendered.

Early this year, Senator Stephen ole Ntutu and a section of MPs from the county held demonstrations in Narok town seeking to oust the governor over graft allegations among other issues.

A special audit by the Auditor General on allegations of weak controls in revenue collection also cleared Tunai of any-wrong doing in the procurement of Kaps as revenue collection agent in Maasai Mara.
