Two arrested for abducting college student

Police in Kabarnet town, Baringo County have detained two men for allegedly abducting a 23-year-old female student from Moi Teachers Training College.

The two suspects, Reuben Kiprop and Elias Yegon who hail from West Pokot County waylaid the Second Year student heading home and forced her into a Toyota Probox with a Ugandan registration number, UAN 231T. Emmanuel Rono, a matatu tout who witnessed the early morning incident raised the alarm, alerting the police. Students unsuccessfully attempted to block the speeding car.

Police officers, with help of members of the public pursued the suspects and caught up with them at Kipsaram in Baringo North Sub County. They were taken to Kabarnet Police Station and will be arraigned in court.

Baringo County Commissioner Peter Okwanyo said the police received reports that some unknown people had abducted a college student and driven towards Kabartonjo. “Police officers pursued the vehicle and caught up with the suspects,” said Okwanyo.

According to investigations, the suspects had been hired by a man from West Pokot to abduct the student.

“The suspects said they had been sent by a man who wanted to marry the student. It is said the man has been paying school fees for her,” said Okwanyo.

The victim said the abductors told her to stop crying and get ready because she was being taken to her suitor.
