MPs want KNEC charges for examination registration shelved

NAIROBI, KENYA: Three MPs have castigated a directive by Kenya Nation Examination Council (KNEC) to school heads to charge registered candidates Sh 3500 to amend and change subjects.

The lawmakers issued a two week ultimatum to the Council's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Joseph Kivilu to immediately and unconditional withdraw the notice or face unspecified action.

Legislators David Ochieng (Ugenya), Johnston Sakaja (nominated) and Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo) on Wednesday lashed at the council's over the circular dated July 10th, claiming that it is meant to reintroduce abolished examination fees by the government through the backdoor.

They questioned the motive of charging Sh 500 to amend the details of registration and Sh3000 to change subjects, cautioning that the directive will deny needy students an opportunity to sit the national examinations.

According to the circular by Dr Kivilu to school heads and all sub county Education Officers and copied to Adult Education and Continuing Education and Ministry of Education, has directed that candidates verify their details by tomorrow (Thursday).
