KRA extends iTax registration to Sunday

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) registered two million clients under the iTax registration platform as at the June 30, 2015 midnight deadline.

KRA Commissioner General John Njiraini said as at midnight last Tuesday, the taxman had registered over two million iTax users, adding the number is expected to increase after the tax returns filing deadline was extended to today midnight.

“Taxpayers who are yet to register on the platform will enjoy a penalty-free reprieve for returns that will be submitted before the new deadline,” said Njiraini.

By law, domestic taxpayers who fail to submit their returns by Sunday face the risk of being surcharged a Sh1,000 minimum penalty or an annual tax claim calculated at the rate of five per cent of the net tax due annually by KRA.

Njiraini said the rapid registration programme focusing on a strict tax returns filing on the iTax platform had managed to net a daily average of 50,000 new users last month.

At the same time, more than 118,000 taxpayers had also managed to file in their manual tax returns with the number of iTax users expected to grow by more than four million as at July next year.
