AP boss shot dead in Nairobi, robbed of valuables

A senior police officer was Wednesday night shot dead and robbed of his gun and other valuables in Njiru area, Nairobi.

The Chief Inspector of Administration Police attached to Njiru Sub County was headed home with his son and a friend when they were confronted by gunmen.

The gang shot him at close range in the head and chest before robbing him of his Ceska pistol that had 14 bullets and other valuables.

Kayole OCPD Ali Nuno said Mr Anjers Kiwanuka was a student of criminology at Kenyatta University.

He said Kiwanuka had taken a plumber to do some repairs in his house and later escorted him to the nearby bus stop.

“As they were walking back, three gunmen emerged and shot in the air and as the officer took cover and tried to go for his gun, they shot him in the head and chest,” said Nuno.

He added the gunmen seem to have known the deceased officer well because they later announced he had been “giving them hard times”.

“They said in Swahili that “ametusumbua sana” (he has been troubling us) after they grabbed his gun, mobile phone and other valuables,” added Nuno.

The gang escaped on foot soon after the attack and no arrest has been made so far.

Senior police officers later visited the scene and announced they had launched a manhunt on the attackers.

Increased crime

Cases of armed robberies have been on the rise. Last week, another senior police officer was shot and seriously wounded in a confrontation with thugs in Kasarani area.

Chief Inspector, J Gicheru, of Special Crimes Prevention Unit was shot in the groin and the bullet exited through the right buttock after he had confronted a gang of five.

Three of the gunmen were killed while two escaped. Gicheru who is a member of an elite police squad that fights armed robbers had shot and floored one of the gunmen and thought he had died.

Witnesses said the gunman then reached for his pistol and shot Gicheru twice before his colleagues rushed to his rescue by spraying more bullets on the grounded man.

Gicheru is admitted in hospital in a stable condition after undergoing an operation. Several senior officers including Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro have visited him in hospital.
