Nakuru teacher accused of eloping with student walks a free man

NAKURU COUNTY: A family in Ruiyobei, Lake Solai, wants the police to trace their secondary school-going daughter suspected to have eloped with a teacher after it was discovered she was pregnant.

The 15-year-old Lake Solai Secondary School Form Two girl was allegedly picked by a man who was her former primary school teacher at Ruiyobei Primary School on the night of May 21.

According to her class teacher, Godwin Jumba, the girl felt sick towards the end of the first term and she was taken to Lake Solai Health Centre for examination.

"After four days, she was sick again and the parents took her to Bahati District Hospital where she tested positive for pregnancy. This shocked us, including her parents, as she was polite and responsible," said Mr Jumba.

Jumba said after being interrogated, the girl said the pregnancy belonged to her former primary school teacher.

"We reported the matter to the chief and the police and later to the district education officer in Rongai and finally reported to the Children's Department in Nakuru but nothing has come forthwith," said the parent.

Statements recorded at Bahati District Hospital and the police station seen by The Standard, show the incident is treated as defilement.

"He held my hand while talking to me. When I told him off, he dragged me into a nearby bush and shut my mouth and defiled me," reads part of the statement made by the minor to the doctor.

The girl informed the authorities that she was very scared to shout for help, and was worried to report the incident to her parents about the ordeal that took place on December 30, 2014.

On April 14 Ruiyobei chief, Mark Mogotio, wrote a letter to the authorities requesting for action to be taken against the culprit, but to date nothing has been done, and the family does not know the whereabouts of their daughter.

The Standard has, however, learnt that the culprit is a free man roaming in the area.

The police through Rongai OCPD Joseph Mwamburi said they are still carrying out investigations on the saga before taking action.

"We are investigating the matter and hunting down the culprit and we will soon catch up with him," he said.

Ruiyobei Primary head teacher Richard Cheruiyot confirmed that the suspected teacher was his staff but had not been in school for some time.

Nakuru Teachers Service Commission Director of Education Agneta Githeka confirmed having received the statement of rape and defilement written by the minor implicating the teacher.

She said disciplinary procedure has been followed and the teacher is in the process of being interdicted.
