Football: Gerrard starts Galaxy training next week

England midfielder Steven Gerrard, the former Liverpool captain who has left behind the English Premier League for Major League Soccer, will be unveiled Saturday by the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Gerrard will be welcomed to the club in a half-time ceremony at the July 4 Independence Day match against visiting Toronto, then take the field with his new teammates on July 7 for his first official workout with the Galaxy.

Gerrard, 35, will become eligible to play for the Galaxy the next day when the international transfer window opens.

Having spent his entire career at Anfield until now, Gerrard and his wife arrived by plane in Los Angeles on Saturday. He announced last January that he would be leaving for the MLS club once his contract with Liverpool expired.

Gerrard follows in the footsteps of former England midfielder and Galaxy superstar David Beckham with the move, a billboard even touting his greatness before he takes the field. Beckham led the Galaxy to the MLS crown in 2011 and 2012.

Gerrard netted 120 goals in 504 matches with Liverpool and 21 more in 114 caps for England.
