Gideon lauds German scholarships to Garissa University attack survivors

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has commended the German Embassy for the recent scholarships offered to students who survived the Garissa University College terror attack.

Speaking after visiting the students who have since been transferred to Moi University in Eldoret, he thanked the German government through the Regional Office for Africa for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), for awarding 300 scholarships.

He said what the Germans did for the students was a clear indication that the whole world was not happy with such primitive acts.

“We should all condemn these terrorist practices in the strongest terms possible. What the embassy has done is a clear sign that terrorism cannot stop students and institutions from progressing with learning,” said the senator.

Last week while on a tour of Eldoret town, the Head of Development Cooperation at the German Embassy Lars Wilke made the announcement during a function at Rivatex East Africa Ltd, that his country had offered some money to assist the Garissa students.

He revealed that the scholarship will cover tuition and accommodation fees totaling Sh50,000 for each student. The money will be paid directly to the university. Each student will also receive Sh10,000 every month.

The recipients of the scholarships were chosen based on needs assessment done by Moi University, Garissa University College, the Commission for Higher Education and DAAD.

The one-year scholarships are intended to cover tuition, monthly allowance and accommodation to help students get back to normal life,” Wilke added.

Gideon also held a closed-door meeting with hundreds of youths drawn from 30 wards in Uasin Gishu County at Kenmosa Resort on the outskirts of Eldoret town. He addressed the Youths for Kanu 2017.

The senator reminded local and national leadership that peace and unity is the answer to the escalation of insecurity in the country.

He told the youths that their party manifesto will ensure that their vision and plans are catered for.

The senator, who was accompanied by Kanu politician Jonathan Bii, North Rift Youth Forum Chairperson Sosten Bellat and Bob Tanui, stated that among the issues highlighted recently in their meetings was unemployment, low funding of the agricultural sector and insecurity in parts of the country, especially along the border areas.

He said unemployment among youths was growing and there is urgent need by the national and county governments to come up with mitigation measures to address the problem, he said.
