University heads told to step up security measures

The Principal Secretary, State Department of Science and Technology Education, Science and Technology Prof Collette Suda, has directed administrators of higher learning institutions to prioritise security issues.

She called on the universities to strengthen their internal quality mechanisms to supplement the government's efforts to promote quality university education.

Speaking during the second graduation ceremony at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology on Friday, the PS appealed to communities surrounding learning institutions to be vigilant and take time to know their neighbours.

Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo challenged the national government to consider channeling part of its huge budgetary allocation to beefing up security in institutions of higher learning.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof Stephen Agong’, noted that the institution had made great strides in their quest to become the centre of excellence in university education, saying, "Our student population has grown from about 4,000 two years ago to about 9,000”.
