Andy Hill, the Braeside Schools executive head has refuted claims that he used a canoe to escape the recent floods from the school’s basement.
Hill said he canoed around the parking lot to inspect the extent of floods.
“I was not stranded at all. I decided to paddle around to check why the parking flooded, and if we could find a quick solution” Hill told The Nairobian.
On May 13, a photo went viral on social media showing Hill coming out of the basement parking in a small canoe with claims he had been marooned down there.
“We found the entire area flooded. I decided to check around the situation and one of my staff took that photo. The water level was barely a metre deep, but I had not seen such floods for years” he said.
It had rained heavily the previous day, resulting in overflowing of a stream passing across the school in Lavington suburbs.
City Hall had to set aside Sh50 million to cater for emergencies emanating from the downpour.
The school boss who is skilled in kayaking told The Nairobian he last witnessed such floods in 1997 and if things got worse he could have still navigated his way out.
