State partners with Mwala CDF to set up second public university in Machakos

Machakos: The national government in collaboration with the Mwala Constituency Development Fund will set up a second public university in Machakos county, an MP said yesterday.

Speaking while inspecting the five-acre plot on which the institution will be built, near Makutano in Mwala, area MP Vincent Musyoka said his CDF kitty would provide Sh10 million while some Sh40 million will be donated by the national government.

The Sh50 million will cater for the start of the university's first phase one.

The university will be the second in the county after the recently established Machakos University College in Machakos town.

The MP said he had no option but to support the national government for the sake of his area's development.

''If this is what they call auctioning a community, then let it be so because my cardinal principal in my leadership is to look out for goodies for my people regardless where they come from'' said Mr Musyoka.

American donor

The MP called upon the county government to move with speed and salvage the Masii polytechnic in his constituency which was at the verge of collapse adding that majority of the students had abandoned it.

Meanwhile, at least all primary schools in Mwala sub-county have something to celebrate at after a US based well-wisher donated text books and games facilities worth Sh50 million.

The donor at the same time offered a two-day free teaching exercise to all deputy head teachers in the sub-county.

The American academician and former administrator Betty Burgess said the donations were from her and a few friends in her country who mind the welfare of others.

The facilities included assessment text books from pre-primary level to Class Eight, calculators and assorted games facilities among other things.

Ms Burgessr said she not only dwelt on education, but also in water and health.
