Discipline Senator Mike Sonko over Mtwapa weighbridge drama, EACC says

NAIROBI: Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission wants Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko grilled by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

It also recommended to the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keriako Tobiko, that Sonko be disciplined by the Senate over a December 2014 incident at the Mtwapa weighbridge, Kilifi County.

The commission sent one of Sonko's files they are investigating to the Director of Public Prosecutions with the recommendations Tuesday.

DPP Keriako Tobiko said his team was studying evidence sent to them and would make his decision shortly.

The DPP may accept the recommendations or reject them or order closure of the file.

The commission had been investigating Sonko for allegedly threatening Kenya National Highways Authority officials over the release of a water tanker.

Sonko and his entourage were reported to have stormed the Mtwapa station and demanding the release of a water tanker, supposedly ferrying water to his Vipingo home, which had been impounded for overloading.

Tuesday, Sonko said he had already recorded a statement with the DCI under the Penal Code offences.

EACC said with regard to Chapter Six of the constitution on his integrity, they wanted the Senator be disciplined by the Senate.

The file was among cases that EACC is probing against Sonko.

Sonko is also among others, named in a corruption scandal at the Kenya Pipeline Company involving Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir where they are accused of being involved in a raft of corrupt deals in the Ministry's tender and procurement process.

The commission is also expected to hand in more files of corruption they are investigating.

The files are among 175 cases that were presented to Parliament in March.

EACC detectives have so far grilled four principle secretaries, two senators, 12 governors, and 11 other senior Government officials who include heads of parastatals.
