Governor Mutua wants Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro to protect county from Muthama's 'attacks'

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua

Governor Alfred Mutua has written to Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro protesting what he terms as unconstitutional and illegal interference by Senator Johnson Muthama in the affairs of the county.

Dr Mutua says Mr Muthama has ‘for purely personal reasons’ been consistently undermining him by making remarks meant to taint his image and that of his government. Yesterday, Mutua (pictured) sought the intervention of the Senate Speaker to protect the county from the alleged malicious attacks by Muthama.

“I humbly write to request for your appropriate action and protection in line with the Constitution and popular aspirations and desires to move the county forward,” said the governor in the letter.

Mutua said during the campaigns in 2013, Muthama had even threatened to resign if he was elected governor.

During the last General Election, Muthama supported Mutua’s rival in the gubernatorial race, Wavinya Ndeti, who was contesting on a Chama Cha Uzalendo party ticket. Mutua and Muthama ran for their respective seats on Wiper tickets.

Yesterday, Mutua in the letter also copied to Senate Majority and Minority leaders Senators Kithure Kindiki and Moses Wetangula, complained that for the past two years, Muthama has also been inciting traders in the county not to pay taxes.

NO REVENUE

“For two years now, the county has not collected even a single cent from the over 15,000 boda boda operators in Mavoko sub-county. As you would appreciate, revenues are important to fund development,” the county chief said.

Last year, Muthama also sought orders to block President Uhuru Kenyatta from visiting Machakos to officiate the launch of the new Machakos City and investment programme. Uhuru is expected in Machakos tomorrow to inspect upgrading projects at the Machakos Level Five Hospital and launch an electrification programme at Katulu Primary School.
