European Union launches projects in Nairobi slums targeting women, children

NAIROBI, KENYA: The European Union will launch two projects targeting Kibera and Korogocho women, pregnant women and children with a specific focus on mothers and children with disabilities over the next two to four years.

The projects will be implemented by Handicap International and Save the Children and partners Action Network for Disabled Youth, Nairobi Family Support Services, Light and Hope for children with disabilities, Carolina for Kibera and Family Health Options Kenya who  have a presence in Kibera and Korogocho, together with the Nairobi county and the Ministry of Health.

“All the health indicators show that child nutrition and maternal health in Kenya’s city slums is below the national average. It is vital that we act now to leave no woman or child behind in Kenya,” Hjordis Ogendo, EU Head of Social Affairs and Environment Section  said

“Having launched projects in the rural area of Kenya, particularly in the Arid and Semi Arid area , the European Union is launching a series of projects to focus on nutrition, family planning, and maternal and child health in poorer urban areas of Kisumu, Mombasa, and today’s launch of two projects in Nairobi.

“The European Union has been supporting maternal and child health in Kenya for almost 20 years. Today’s two projects are part of Shs1.9 billion of programme funding from the European Union and two of 21 projects currently being implemented  in the country.”

Since 2008, the European Union has allocated  Shs 2.8 billion to enhancing maternal and child health in Kenya and is supporting the Government of Kenya and the First Lady Beyond Zero Campaign efforts to improve maternal and child health.
