Love triangle turns ugly as wife to former Ambassador sleeps with brother-in-law

Love triangle cartoon

When the rich do stuff — whatever it may be — they do it in a big way. If it’s a scandal, it is always one of epic proportions.

Currently, Uganda is rocked with one hell of a scandal that is now on everyone’s lips. We have a scandalous love triangle on our hands, one we have never witnessed before.

Would you imagine a marriage where the man of the house not only seduces his sisters-in law, but also gets between the sheets with the house girl?

And his wife, in what is suspected to be a move to spite and disgrace her husband, gets into an affair with her brother-in-law?

Well, former Ugandan Ambassador to Malawi, Robert Mwesigwa, had married Isabel Katembwe, daughter to the former NSSF director, in 2002 when she was just out of campus with his brother-in-law, Richard Kabonero, acting as MC (master of ceremonies) on that joyous occasion.

Just so you know, Richard is Uganda’s Ambassador to Rwanda, and is married to Robert’s sister, Grace.

The Mwesigwas and the Kaboneros were close, with the former even helping the latter buy a house in the US and assisting to educate their children.

Isabel would also sometimes visit and live with the Kaboneros. The Mwesigwas marriage was tumultuous and ended in an acrimonious divorce in 2012, leaving the three children in Robert’s custody and Isabel with Sh10m on her account as the divorce settlement.

Robert accused Isabel of being an extravagant gold digger who was addicted to Facebook, and had an indecent lifestyle that would not even allow her to perform her matrimonial duties such as cooking or child care.

Sex addict

The straw that broke the camel’s back was a revelation that Isabel was having an affair with Richard. Robert came to know of this after he snooped and stumbled on raunchy texts and Facebook chats between the two.

Isabel counter-accused Robert of being a sexual predator and sex addict who had tried to seduce her sisters and female cousins on various occasions. She also claimed to have once caught him red-handed fondling their housemaid.

One wonders where she was all this time. It is such katemba (drama) that Ugandans would have loved when it was fresh.

 Special prayers

What’s more, she said, he would not give her any respite from conjugal duties when she was on her menses or even soon after childbirth before she was properly healed.

The winner here is clearly Isabel who probably began to get bored when her husband lost his consulate post and became a mere businessman. He did not share her affinity for Facebook unlike debonair Richard who would post love songs on his Facebook page for her to ‘like’.

After the divorce, Robert met and wooed Phionah Busingye before tying the knot with her at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi early last month. The reception was held a week later at Chobe Lodge, Murchinson Falls National Park with 350 guests comprising the crème de la crème of Uganda’s high society.

Prominent political figures and business people graced the lavish affair, with some arriving in helicopters. Robert remains an embittered man despite professing love and adoration for his new wife.

There was no need for whispered lugambo (gossip) as the groom himself stood up to make a toast, thanking all present for gracing the occasion.

In his speech he lambasted Richard as “shameless and an abomination to African culture”.

He also beseeched the guests to say special prayers and novenas for Richard and his ex-wife Isabel.

A printed copy of the speech was gifted to all the guests as one of the mementos to take home with them afterwards.
