Parliament employee Ali Abdulmajid Ahmed remanded for 10 days to allow terror probe

A Nairobi court has granted the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) 10 days to continue holding in custody an employee of Parliament linked to terror.

Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Benson Nzakyo remanded Ali Abdulmajid Ahmed at Kilimani police station.

The prosecution had sought for 20 days but the court granted the ATPU 10 days to complete investigations before Ahmed is arraigned in court.

Through State Counsel Daniel Karuri, the ATPU Tuesday urged the court to grant the prosecution custodial orders, pending investigations into the incident in which Ahmed is suspected to have been recruited by Al-Shabaab terror group to assist in casing parliament premises for a possible attack.

The suspect was not in court when the prosecution made the application.

Ahmed was arrested on April 26 at Pangani Area following intelligence reports that he had allegedly been assigned to survey Parliament for an impending terror attack.

The prosecution told the court if the investigations reveal that Ahmed is involved in the said terror-related activities, then he will be charged in court once investigations are complete.

“The ATPU is intending to carry out investigations which are likely to involve travel to Kitale and so the unit requires adequate time,” the state counsel said.
