Access to information ‘key to development ’ Kenyans told

NAIROBI: The realisation of Vision 2030 goals in Kenya is dependent on the Government’s willingness to improve access to information to boost public participation, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has said.

UNDP Country Director Maria-Threase Keating, speaking at a workshop for county and Government communications officers in Mombasa, said citizens’ awareness, acceptance and ownership of milestone projects are key to Kenya’s development.

“Access to information, apart from being a basic right, is a key ingredient that will spur economic growth, based on citizens’ knowledge of why development projects will benefit them,” she said.

She added that corporate governance would also be enhanced if the public is given the ability to question institutional lethargy.
