van Gaal names manager that will succeed him at Manchester United

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says Ryan Giggs will be his successor at Old Trafford.

Giggs, the club's all-time appearance maker, was appointed assistant manager to Van Gaal in May when the Dutchman took over.

It came after a brief spell as caretaker boss last season following David Moyes sacking, which saw the Welshman in charge of four United games.

Van Gaal's contract is due to expire in 2017 and at the age of 63, he is yet to confirm whether he will renew it.

But the United boss is under no illusions who will take over if and when he decides to walk away.

"I expect that he will be the next manager after I am gone," Van Gaal told MUTV when asked about Giggs.

"Now I have the responsibility. He has tasks that he has to perform like the players.

"What he has to do, for me, he does it very well."

After replacing Moyes, Giggs said it was the proudest moment of his career as United went on to win two, draw one and lose one of his games in charge.

At the time, he said: "I have supported Manchester United all my life, I have been a part of the club since I was 13. I am proud, I am happy, a little nervous.

"I have got to say it is the proudest moment of my life."
