Kisumu, Kenya - More than 200 police officers from outside Kisumu County will be deployed to beef up security during the second devolution conference that begins tomorrow in Kisumu.

Nyanza Regional Police Coordinator Willy Lugusa said they have stepped up security in the lakeside city ahead of the conference that will be graced by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“We are up to the task and we have done everything to ensure every place - from the venue to the hotels where our visitors will putting up - is safe,” said Mr Lugusa.

He refuted rumours of a rift between the Kenya Police and their administrative colleagues that is said to have affected security operations in the area.

The regional police boss indicated there were more activities scheduled to take place in Kisumu and that they had increased surveillance. “Apart from the conference, we will be having the police recruitment and we are required to dispatch several police officers to the hiring centres,” Lugusa said.

He warned those who may want to engage in criminal activities during the event that they will be arrested and prosecuted.

During the burial of the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s son Fidel Odinga earlier this year, many people were robbed of their valuables including journalists who had gone to cover the event.

“I am telling criminals to keep off because anybody apprehended for engaging in criminal activities will face the full force of the law,” said Lugusa.

Meanwhile, preparations for the event were in top gear at Tom Mboya Labour College where it will be held.

Chief Officer for Roads Samuel Ondola expressed optimism that the event would be a success. He said they had gravelled all access roads in readiness for the conference.
