Three MPs, Transport PS Nduva Muli quizzed over graft claims

Kenya: Three MPs who were members of the disbanded Public Accounts Committee (PAC) were questioned for hours Friday by the anti-graft detectives for allegedly receiving Sh1.5 million as bribe.

Nyatike MP Edick Anyanga, Kesses MP James Bett and Ijara MP Ibrahim Ahmed Abass spent the better of their time yesterday at the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) Integrity Centre offices in Nairobi.

When Bett stepped out of the offices, he maintained his innocence, saying EACC should be given time to investigate, prosecute and release a report within the specified time.

He said that the disbandment of PAC has nothing to do with politics but with its performance and the report by the Powers and Privileges Committee.

PAC, whose members traded bribery accusations, prompting a parliamentary investigation, has since been dissolved on the recommendations of the Powers and Privileges Committee that also banned Namwamba and five lawmakers from reappointment to the watchdog.

The EACC report named the MPs in the committee for allegedly receiving Sh1.5 million from former Interior Permanent Secretary, now Defence Principal Secretary Mutea Iringo, to expunge his name from the committee’s report on unexplained expenditure at the Office of the President.

By last evening, Anyanga and Abass were still being interrogated and recording their statements.

Transport PS Nduva Muli also appeared EACC for a second time and was still in the interrogation room by evening. Muli had appeared before the anti-graft body on Friday last week.

He is being accused of irregularly disposing Kenya Railways properties.
