Insurance agents ask Attorney General Githu Muigai to amend draft bill

Nyeri, Kenya - Insurance agents have protested against a proposed bill that is set to be tabled in Parliament for debate soon.

Through their umbrella organisation, Bima Intermediaries Association of Kenya (BIAK), the agents have petitioned Attorney General Githu Muigai to amend contentious clauses in the draft law.

The agents say if the bill is not amended, it would push them out of business.

Speaking in Nyeri yesterday after meeting BIAK members in the county, association's chairman Washington Ndegea warned that the new law, if passed in its present form, would cripple the operations of the agents.

He cited Article 90 of the draft law as one of the contentious clauses. "It proposes that an individual agent may not act as the agent of more than one insurer in respect of life insurance and general insurance," he said.

"This proposed law is not in the best interests of agents and that's why we are petitioning Mr Muigai to amend it before it's taken to Parliament for debate," Mr. Ndegea said.

BIAK aims to recruit more than 6,000 registered insurance agents across the country.
