Nyakach Girls shines to blot out cheat tag from previous KCSE

KISUMU: Nyakach Girls High School whose results were cancelled last year attained a mean score of 8.6 after registering 566 candidates for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Students of the institution that found itself in the list of shame for cheating in 2013 examinations were happy when they got news that none of the over 500 candidates scored less than C- in the 2014 KCSE.

The cheating resulted in the cancellation of results for 211 candidates out of 286 of those who sat the examination in 2013.

Nyakach Girls Principal Jennifer Omondi said they managed to get eight A plain, 49 A– and 84 B+.

"We have 146 B plains, 152 B-, 93 C+, 15 Cs, five C- and three results were withheld by Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) for having registered for wrong subjects."

And Kisumu Girls High School students took to the streets in Kisumu to celebrate their improvement from a mean grade of 9.3 in 2013 exams to 9.7 in the 2014 results.

The school Principal Mary Akunja said they managed to get 90 plain As, 62 A-, 70 B+, 28 B-, 12 C+ and only two plain Cs.

JOIN UNIVERSITY

"Out of 265 students who sat the examination last year, 99 per cent have received results that qualify them to join university since only two have plain Cs," she said.

A school within Obunga slums in Kisumu County whose majority students are orphans registered improved results.

Kanyamedha Secondary School's mean score improved from 5.6 to 6.7 this year.

"Forty out of 66 candidates who sat the examinations were orphans who learned for free because they could not afford school fees. We are impressed that 27 of them have qualified for university," said the Principal Caroline Oriwa.
