Couple calls it quits after 63 years over pay out

Nyeri, Kenya: It was jubilation for many Mau Mau veterans when, in 2013, they won a landmark ruling against the former British colonial government that led to them receive compensation for atrocities suffered at the time.

However, for an elderly couple in Kibutio village, Mukurwe-ini, what should have been a change of fortune for them has turned into a death sentence for their 63-year-old marriage.

The two, Lawrence Kairianja, 83, and his wife Thaderinah Wanjiru, 80, are Mau Mau war veterans who received Sh340,000 as compensation from the British government.

DENIED CLAIMS

Kairianja's brother, Daniel Wanjohi, told The Standard that trouble started soon after this money was received and culminated with Wanjiru "conspiring with her children to throw him out of the home".

"He was ejected from his matrimonial home by his wife and children and has been sleeping in a neighbour's kitchen where he also gets food and other necessities," Wanjohi said, adding that Kairianja's shoes and clothes were also set ablaze.

Wanjiru however, denied the allegations saying she received the money a while back and has continued to live with her husband, taking care of him as usual.

"We did receive the Mau Mau money and it was me who had spearheaded the case. We have been using the money together to buy household items and foodstuffs," she said.

She also denied assaulting the old man, saying it was he who was violent. She said he was harsh, dealt with her in a highhanded manner and was prone to attacking her with anything in his hands.

"I should be applauded for continuing to live with him even though he left me for many years to fend for the children single-handedly, despite having a job in Nairobi and only surfaced once he retired," she said.

The couple's compound was a bee-hive of activity as neighbour's came together to build a home for Kairianja, away from the main family home.

"All the building materials we are using have been given by neighbours and other well wishers," Wanjohi said.

Kairianja, who appeared depressed, remained mum as all this played out.
