ODM disciplinary committee to grill Kidero, two MPs for defying the party

Nairobi, Kenya: The ODM disciplinary committee will on Friday grill Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and two MPs for defying the party.

The three politicians had been scheduled to appear before the committee Wednesday.

Committee Chairman Fred Athuok said the team agreed to push the session to Friday morning due to short notice given to Dr Kidero and MPs James Rege (Karachuonyo) and George Oner (Rangwe).

The three are expected to show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against them for openly defying the party and campaigning for rival candidates in the forthcoming Homa Bay senatorial by-election.

Mr Athuok's team Wednesday met at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi and resolved to postpone the grilling to allow the parties’ time to prepare.

"Due to the short notice of serving them with summonses, we have resolved to schedule Friday morning for their appearance," Athuok said, adding that the decision was also reached at after a committee member was bereaved.

The Political Parties Act provides for penalties for party indiscipline, which may include expulsion, leading to one losing a seat. The law says a person who, while being a member of a political party, promotes the ideology of another political party shall be deemed to have resigned from the sponsoring party.
