Anne Waiguru was among Top 40 under 40 women

By Sheila Kimani (@sheilakimm)

Women in power were once a rare phenomenon, but recent years have seen a twist in the trends.

Having been among the Top 40 under 40 women, and going ahead to score lucrative jobs in the public service, Anne Waiguru has steadily proven that Kenyan women have the chance to bring about positive change.

She attended Precious Blood Riruta High school then later sat her A-level exams in 1989 at the Moi Forces Academy in Nairobi where she studied Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Upon graduating from the University of Nairobi, she worked for Transparency International as an intern and research assistant, and then joined the Kenya Leadership Institute which flaunted some of the best economists in the country.

Her entrance to the public service saw her take up positions such as the governance advisor in the Ministry of Finance during Hon. Kimunya’s time. Other of her roles included director of the Integrated Financial Information Management Information system (IFMIS). Head of Governance at the National Treasury, assistant Vice President, at Citigroup NA, and a Technical Advisor in the Cabinet Office, Office of the President.

Currently she holds the Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning docket, that combines remarkable departments that were once fledged ministries including the former ministry of Planning and National Development, the former ministries of Local Government,  Public Service, Special Programmes, Youth Affairs, Northern Kenya and Gender.

When she is not busy at work, Anne likes reading, travelling dancing and spending time with her three sons Ian, Don and Wabu. Quite the role model she inspires a sense of success in many young ladies in leadership who would love to be in her position one day.
