'Hi-tech devices needed to fight crime'

Kenya should adopt hi-tech communication systems and other modern technology to fight terrorism and other emerging crimes, officials have said.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Mombasa Campus Director Fred Mugambi said modern technology is vital in monitoring, detecting and preventing crime because criminals have become more sophisticated and are no longer solely relying on brute force.

Dr Mugambi said police, emergency services and citizens should embrace technology like CCTV and other tools of surveillance to record and detect crime.

"A time is coming when we will no longer require perimeter walls around our homes," he said during a university event at Aga Khan hall in Mombasa.

He said Kenyans should also use social media, crowd behaviour monitoring systems, and crime and risk monitoring systems to fight crime.

Mombasa Deputy County Commissioner Salim Mahmoud said Kenyans have no option but to go digital following changes taking place in the world.
