Helb promises to release students’ loan by Tuesday

Higher Education Loans Board CEO Charles Ringera.

A meeting between Higher Education Loans Board officials and Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang over disbursement of loans to students, agreed that allocations to all successful students would be completed by this morning.

"The successful students will get text messages by midnight Sunday to confirm that their money is in. The money will be disbursed latest Tuesday," said a source who was present at the meeting.

The crisis meeting came as students vowed to proceed with their strike Monday to demand the release of their money.

University of Nairobi student leader Babu Owino had earlier Sunday told The Standard that their planned strike was as a result of no communication from the Government or the board over the delay.

"They (board) have not communicated regarding the delayed loans and our plans to strike are on. There will be a strike in all areas," said Mr Owino on the phone.

Owino said the students will block roads near Kikuyu campus, Upper Kabete, Lower Kabete, Kenya Science, Kenyatta National Hospital, Main and Chiromo campuses.
