Sports cabinet secretary Hassan Wario (above) on Friday unveiled the Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS) recruitment at the Kasarani stadium. The national selection that targets young talent in various sports will also be devolved to the counties.

“The country needs sportsmen and women to develop. To achieve this, we need to identify talented players at a young age so they can be nurtured to become professionals,” Wario said, as he urged the players from Nairobi County who turned up for the recruitment to work hard so they can make a living from their talent.

He also affirmed the government’s commitment to ending the doping menace that has tainted Kenyan sports. “We have resources to support our sports, but we can’t continue cheating ourselves. The quality of our athletes can’t be compromised, our sports should be clean.”

He cautioned managers who may be involved in doping that the government will hunt them down in a quest to protect athletes. “We will not let anyone gamble with the careers of our players. Anyone who attempts that will not go unpunished.”

He also called on federations that are affected by doping to work with his ministry to stop the vice. KAS together with county sports bodies will identify talent and foster it through county talent centres. KAS will also work with the Kenya Secondary Sports Association to achieve the objectives. They will select schools in different counties that will serve as talent centres.

Douglas Ratemo of KAS assured Kenyans and county representatives that the institution will see to it that they fully support the counties.

“We will work together with all counties to ensure that we improve our sports. We have very many talented players and through the counties we will be able to reach them,” Ratemo said.
