Kenya: The county administration and the Ministry of Health have unveiled a plan to expand Pumwani Maternity Hospital.
In a tender notice, Governor Evans Kidero said the refurbishment was aimed at boosting service delivery.
"Due to the condition of the hospital and limited resources, the Nairobi County government in conjunction with the Ministry of Health has initiated the expansion of the maternity hospital and the Maternity College of Midwifery," said Dr Kidero.
The governor said once complete, the hospital would provide a wide range of services.
"The new 450-bed hospital will enhance quality maternal care services, which will in turn contribute to attainment of the Millennium Development Goals on reduction of infant and maternal mortality rates," said Kidero.
He said expansion of the Pumwani Maternity College of Nursing and Midwifery was aimed at increasing student enrollment as well as enhancing the quality of training.
The hospital is the largest public health facility providing reproductive and neo-natal services in East and Central Africa.
Three theatres
It has 354 obstetric beds, 144 baby cots and three theatres. Daily normal deliveries are between 50 and 100, and Caesarean sections are 10-15.
"In 2014-2015, we set aside Sh250 million for infrastructural improvement of the hospital to boost maternal neo-natal and child health services," the county's Communication Director, Beryl Okundi, said.
In the 2013-2014 financial year, the hospital's third theatre was rehabilitated and equipped at a cost of Sh17,865,000.
A tender for rehabilitating and equipping the institution's High Dependency Unit was awarded in November 2013 and the works, which cost Sh62.2 million, have been completed.
Kidero said Chase Foundation and DT Dobie donated two ambulances worth Sh10 million to the hospital in May last year to boost operations at the facility.
On Mbagathi Hospital, the governor said services had improved, adding that his government allocated the facility Sh150 million for infrastructural improvement in the 2014-2015 financial year.
He said a new 120-bed maternity wing at the hospital was already operational. The county also plans to upgrade Mutuni District Hospital in Dagoretti South at a cost of Sh50 million.

The governor said they were engaging partners for a possible public-private partnership in the project.
