Bus with over 70 passengers rams tree

Seventy-two passengers heading to Western region from Nairobi escaped death narrowly after a bus they were travelling in rammed a tree in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

The driver of the Bestways bus was, however, seriously injured during the midday accident near Delamere shopping center on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The accident occurred after the rear tyre of the bus burst, leading to the incident that caused a huge traffic jam.

"The driver did all he could to control the bus but we ended up ramming a tree and the driver was seriously injured," said Isaiah Wafula, a passenger.

A police officer who declined to be named because of his rank termed the accident as self-involving.

"The driver has been rushed to the Naivasha Sub-County Referral Hospital in serious but stable condition but the other passengers are in good condition," said the officer.

Rift Valley traffic boss Mary Omari said they have intensified patrols on major roads in the region, and are targeting speeding drivers and defective vehicles. The accident came two days after two saloon cars collided head -n near Diatomite centre in Gilgil, killing three people and injuring three others.
