The changes were communicated to the commanders on Tuesday and were discussed yesterday at a National Police Service Commission meeting, which was attended by Kimaiyo and his deputies Grace Kaindi (Kenya Police) and Samuel Arachi (AP).

The changes ended days of speculation and anxiety among the officers who had been vetted and confirmed to new ranks.

The Commission announced it had created seven positions of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police, 63 positions of Assistant Inspector General of Police and 102 for Commissioner of Police.

Another rank of Assistant Superintendent of police was created to be above the chief inspector.

Commissioner of police will be in charge of counties. This means more changes are expected soon.

Vetting of police officers is ongoing and was among the more than 200 proposals of a commission set up following the 2007-2008-post election violence.
