Graft fuelling drug abuse, says John Mututho

NAKURU COUNTY: Corruption is hampering the fight against illicit brews and drug abuse in the country, the National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) has said.

Nacada said some corrupt police officers and national government officers are a major impediment to its work.

Nacada Chairman John Mututho said they were committed to addressing the rising use of illicit brews but some officers were frustrating their efforts.

Mr Mututho was, however, quick to note that the challenges could be addressed by working closely with the Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government.

"We have some diligent officers but there are many out there who are working with illegal brewers and drug sellers, making our job difficult," he said.

Addressing the Press in Naivasha, Mututho said the authority has information that drug traffickers were targeting school children.

He warned brewers who were airing commercials on TV against the set laws. Mututho said they were recording adverts from various companies, adding that they would move to court soon.
