Mystery as dialysis patient disappears from KNH ward, body discovered in a thicket

Wilfred Weke was found dead along the road after disappearing from KNH ward.

Nairobi, Kenya: The family of a 24-year-old student is reeling in shock after their kin mysteriously disappeared from Kenyatta National Hospital where he had been taken for dialysis.

The student, Wilfred Weke, was taken to KNH on Saturday for a dialysis procedure and had to wait for 24 hours before he was ultimately admitted at around midnight.

The family was told to go home because he was going to undergo dialysis procedure for four hours.

However, they were called two hours later and told Weke was missing from his ward. This sent alarm bells because by the time of his admission, he was allegedly too frail to walk.

When they rushed to the facility to check on Weke's progress, their worst fears were confirmed as his whereabouts could not be accounted for.

His sister, Faith Weke, demanded an explanation from the hospital on what happened to his brother.

"Officials here said that he disappeared. How can that be? We need to know what happened," she said.

According to Wilfred's nephew Daniel, they successful admitted him after an intervention from a relative.

The distraught family says they were informed that Weke, a student at Zetech College, was found dead covered with a KNH clothe along Mara Road in Upper Hill with no explanations on how he left the hospital where he had been admitted for the procedure on Sunday night.

The family said he was too weak to walk alone from the hospital and have demanded answers from the management on how he died outside the hospital.

"We were told to go home at about midnight as he awaited dialysis but at 2am, a doctor called us saying Wilfred was missing and could not be traced," said Daniel.

He added that at about 7.45 am on Monday, a staff at KNH said he had spotted a body covered with the hospital's clothing along Mara Road, almost a kiloemeter away.

A physical check showed he had injuries on his stomach and chest.

"He was naked when he was picked up by the KNH vehicle to the City Mortuary. We do not know what happened," Daniel added.

Police have also joined the probe after the family formally lodged a complaint.

KNH spokesman Simon Ithae said they are yet to know what happened adding that investigation into the incident has been launched.

"We have launched our internal investigations into the sad incident with an intention of taking action if there was negligence," said Ithae.

He denied claims by the family that the hospital CEO had refused to see them.

Kilimani OCPD Peter Katam said they were informed that the body was on the road and together with KNH staff, they moved it to the City mortuary.

"Already some people have been questioned as investigations continue," said Katam.
