Residents of Kajiado County take their Governor to task at Sikika Sasa Forum

Residents of Kajiado County took their governor- Dr. David Nkedianye, to task, on issues affecting them at KTN's talk show, Sikika Sasa hosted by Jeff Koinange.

The show was held at the Maasai Technical Training Institute.

Land, poor roads, water shortage and FGM featured among the pertinent issues affecting Kajiado residents during the show.

“Our ancestral land is being sold without our knowledge. Most people have lost land since most of us are hardly aware of land rights,” Agnes Kasino, a resident told the Standard.

Kajiado County governor Nkedianye termed the issue as an emotive matter that needs to be addressed.

“We are working to improve our land registration system and to ensure justice is upheld. Land issues will be addressed and an awareness exercise on land rights will be conducted across Kajiado,” he further added.

At the show the speaker of the County Assembly- Johnson Ole Osoi noted that the county’s proximity to Nairobi has affected the residents as most people from the capital are purchasing land at Kajiado.

“Since every Kenyan has the right to own land, we will formulate policies to ensure public land is utilized in a sustainable way," he added.

Besides land matters, Water has been a challenge to the residents for a while now. The locals asked the county leadership to ensure equality is observed, in the distribution of piped water.

Some of the residents living on the outskirts of the town have been forced to purchase water on a daily basis. They have incurred costs that have made life a bit hard for them.

“We have sunk boreholes, constructed a dam to store water; though not enough, we are yet to curb the matter soon,” promised Governor Nkedianye

Residents complained of poor roads in various parts of the county, an issue they pleaded with the county government to address.

County Women Rep. Mary Seneta said there is need to plan the counties infrastructure.

The leaders led by Governor David Nkedianye, insisted that they have made change with the resources available on infrastructure.

“We have opened a number of areas within the county in terms of road construction. The upcoming financial year, will see us improve a great deal,” said Governor Nkedianye.

FGM was also mentioned as an issue that has impacted the girl child’s education in the county.

Kajiado residents asked the county government to protect the girl child from the practice as it has negatively affected many in the area.

They further described the practice as traditional, one that has lost its value.

“We are laying structures to empower women to enrol in technical institutions,” said Women Rep. Mary Seneta.

Leaders in the area vowed to look into the issues aired at the forum, to make Kajiado a better place for the residents.
