Law Society of Kenya seeks permission to prosecute Women 'strippers'

Nairobi, Kenya: The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has sought special permission from the Director of Public Prosecution to prosecute men stripping women in public.

The LSK Chairman Eric Mutua said that the National Police Service should also immediately form a special unit to patrol areas where the crimes are likely to happen.

“The ongoing brutality that is stripping our women in public for allegedly dressing in an indecent manner must be brought to an end,” Mutua said.

The LSK Chairman said that there are criminal elements within the Kenyan male population that has also taken to defiling, assaulting and insulting women by stripping them naked.

Mutua said that video clips of women being stripped naked have gone viral on Facebook and Twitter handles, which must be contained.

“These kinds of actions are not only illegal but immoral by all standards and should never be tolerated or condoned in   a civilized society,” Mutua said.

The LSK Chairman said that the professional body is petitioning the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mr. Keriako Tobiko for special permission to prosecute the criminals.

“LSK wants to be granted special leave by the DPP to prosecute any person arrested in connection with stripping, defiling or insulting women in public,” Mr. Mutua said.

He said that the National Police Service should also form a special unit to assist the public in apprehending the suspects.

Mutua said that any member of the public has a civil duty to arrest any person who commits or is likely to commit an offence.

“Any man or woman who witnesses any person molesting, defiling or stripping a woman should arrest and deliver them to the nearest police station/post,” Mutua said.

Hundreds of protesters took to Nairobi streets recently to condemn the humiliating public stripping of three women.

The mobilization for the protest started through social media under the hash tag #MyDressMyChoice.

The protesters marched from Uhuru Park to a bus stage on Accra Road, where people alleged to be touts were earlier filmed ripping off a woman’s clothes for allegedly dressing indecently.
