Knut, Kuppet tell teachers to leave region

Teachers' unions have directed members in regions scarred by insecurity to leave their stations and return to Nairobi for redeployment following the killing of 24 teachers in Mandera County.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) instructed all their members who are non-residents of North Eastern region to withdraw their services.

Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion said the State must take full responsibility for those who were massacred by compensating their families and meeting funeral expenses.

INSECURE REGIONS

"We have directed all our teachers who are not residents of North Eastern to withdraw from such areas and come back to Nairobi for redeployment. Keep away from those insecure regions until we state otherwise," said Mr Sossion.

Addressing the Press shortly after viewing victims' bodies at Chiromo Funeral Parlour, Sossion insisted that Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku and Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo ought to have resigned "like yesterday".

Kuppet Secretary General Akello Misori said the Mandera attack was an affront to the teaching fraternity.

"We have advised our members to boycott teaching in such areas. We shall not take this matter lightly," said Mr Misori, adding when people were killed in Kapedo, the Government compensated the police officers.
