What happened to being young, wild and just enjoying life?

Girls having fun

I have two friends; a chick and a dude. They are not my best friends, I do not even think that the phrase ‘best friends’ should be used in relation to people in campus because their loyalty is usually wavering.

Anyway, the girl got knocked up while we were in campus. She suffered the brunt of pregnancy in campus with a ‘mother-in-law’ who did not want her to keep the pregnancy.

Now she lives as a pariah with the boy who put her in the family way. Let’s call the new mother Beryl.

The dude was a staunch member of the Christian Union. We never spoke much while in campus, but he is a literature fan boy, so we are acquaintances.

Once in a while he pops up on my Facebook chat to discuss a story. Being a crowing cock and member of the Christian Union our conversations tend to be a bit weird.

I cannot talk to him freely. It is easy to tell that I am walking on eggshells when around him. Anyway, let’s call the man of God Peter.

Peter is getting married soon. During one of those Facebook chats, he told me that he is planning on going down on one knee come graduation day (which is barely a month from now) to ask for his girlfriend’s hand in marriage.

I asked him why he thought she was the one, and he said God told him so.

These two friends, Beryl and Peter put so much into perspective. At a glance, they may seem to be on extreme sides but they really are not. They are a snapshot of the changing landscape of campus life today. Also, they embarrass me.

Social media

Look, being 23, I imagine that I am a long way from getting hitched. At this age, I am fighting my girlfriend’s drunk and ugly ex-boyfriend who still lives with his mother at the age of 28.

I am wallowing in the confusion that is the dating scene. I am staying up late drinking and working and spinning the cogs that I can in this newly rebased economy.

I am constantly on social media, pondering how far men have declined that they no longer appreciate the sight of a healthy pair of thighs.

I am posting pictures on Instagram and liking my own statuses - blowing my own trumpet because nobody will blow it for me and I think silent trumpets are useless.

Basically, I am being a 23 year old in the 21st century. But these guys make me feel juvenile. They are doing weird things like growing up, being mature and taking up responsibilities - just like adults.

Who does that at age 23? What is the hurry for? What happened to being young and stupid? I am not asking for a friend. I am asking for myself.
