Kilemi Mwiria’s team proposes new pay for non-teaching staff

NAIROBI, KENYA: Non-teaching staff in secondary schools will soon be paid a salary of up to Sh41,000 if the proposals of the new education task force report are adopted.

The Kilemi Mwiria-led team called for rationalisation of the number of non-teaching staff based on student enrolment and the number of streams per school.

"Essential support staff should be employed on permanent and pensionable terms and follow set norms in engaging other categories," the report partly reads.

A secretary in public secondary schools will take home a maximum of Sh24,662 per month. Their minimum pay will be Sh12,510. The report puts all secretaries under job groups F, G, and H.

The school bursar, who will be in job group K, will now earn Sh41,590 per month. Minimum pay for bursars has been set at Sh31,020.

These staff will be required to have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) III qualification.

CATERING CERTIFICATE

Office messengers will fall under job group D and will take home a minimum pay of Sh10,380.  They will earn a maximum pay of Sh11,370. The basic requirement for one to be hired as a messenger is Form Four academic papers.

Cateresses have been proposed to earn a maximum of Sh21,304. They will fall under job groups F and G. Their minimum pay will be Sh12,510. These staff will be required to have a Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) certificate in Catering.

Cooks will take home Sh11,370 and or a minimum of Sh9,660 per month. They will fall under job groups C and D and will be expected to have Form Four qualification.

Information and Communication Technology technicians will fall under job groups F and G and will get a maximum pay of Sh21,304 or a minimum of Sh12,510.
