Police refute claims car tried to force way to Governor Isaac Ruto's home

Police have dispelled claims that a suspicious vehicle tried to force its way into Governor Isaac Ruto's residence in Chepalungu on Saturday.

County Police Commander Lea Kithei said the vehicle was parked 500 metres from Governor Ruto's gate.

Speaking to The Standard Monday, Ms Kithei said the vehicle sped off when officers manning the gate approached it, raising the suspicions.

"We can confirm there was a suspicious vehicle near Governor Ruto's residence on Saturday but it was not trying to force its way into the compound as alleged.

"It was parked and sped off when officers approached it to question the occupants," she said.

Kithei also denied there was an exchange of fire, saying the driver just sped off.

She said residents noticed the vehicle and informed the officers who immediately sought to establish why it was parked there.

The police boss said they were investigating to establish the identity of the vehicle's occupants and their motive for being in the area.

Planned meeting

Meanwhile, a planned meeting by Bomet MPs to discuss political intolerance regarding the Pesa Mashinani referendum push being fronted by Ruto had been called off.

The meeting, which had been planned for November 1, was called off at the last minute following the death of Ruto's daughter.

Chepalungu MP Paul Bii said at the weekend they would be setting another date for the meeting.
