Four arrested for destroying shrine

Four men were yesterday arrested in Kamatarguy village, Nandi County for destroying a traditional shrine.

The shrine - ‘Kapkiyai’ - is a cultural place along a forest wetland where Nandi traditional initiation rites are carried out.

The arrests were carried out by officials from National Environment Management Authority, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Public Administration and Nandi County government.

It followed a public outcry from Kamatarguy residents who reported logging activities in the traditional shrine.

The four will face other charges including illegal logging and destruction of water catchment areas.
