MPs demand arrest of former Moyale MP Guyo Halake murderers

Leaders from North Eastern have given the Government one week ultimatum to find the killers of former Moyale MP Guyo Halake.

Moyale MP Roba Duba condemned the assassination and said the incident should be adequately investigated and assailants brought to book. “Those are enemies of peace. It is unfortunate because he was a prominent member of the Borana community and the peace process,” he told journalists.

Duba said a number of such killings have gone unresolved making many think the Government does not care: “It is not the first time such unresolved murders have taken place. We have in the past lost chiefs, headmen and many village notables all in unexplained circumstances. This needs to stop.”

Isiolo South MP Bantisha Abdullah said despite efforts to bring a lasting solution to Moyale conflict, those whose politics thrive on conflict are trying to derail the peace process.

“The Government should move with speed to bring the perpetrators to book, failure to which we will hold them responsible for any repercussion that might occur from failure to act,” he said.

Saku MP Dido Rasso also condemned the killing. Halake was a member of the Borana Council of Elders and was also part of the peace process between the feuding Degodia and Garreh communities. He served the constituency between 1979 and 1983 and was a key member of the Francis Kaparo Peace Commission set up by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
