Man jailed after he beat up his own mother and broke her back for Sh 2,500

A thug who beat up his own mother and broke her back because she refused to lend him Sh 2,500 has been jailed for six years. Jai Falconer, 40, attacked Joyce, 69, after banging on her door at 7am.
He told his elderly mum he was going to make some toast but attacked her when she refused to loan him Sh 2,500.
Falconer punched her, then battered her with a plastic brush as she cowered on the floor of her home in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs. When the thug grabbed her purse from her bedroom, Mrs Falconer threatened to call the police.
The pensioner managed to struggle to the front door and alerted a neighbour, who had already called 999. Mrs Falconer was taken to hospital. She suffered a fractured vertebrae in her back and may need surgery.
Prosecutor Paul Farrow told the court: "He looked around the fridge and said he was going to have toast, and wanted Sh 1,300. Then straight away he said 'no, give me Sh 2,500'.
"The defendant then began to hit her with a plastic kitchen brush, at least five or six times, striking her all over her body."
Defending Falconer, Anis Ali added: "It's clear that the catalyst of this offending appears to be his habitual use of illicit substances and alcohol.
"It was a sense of desperation that lead him to be in the situation he found himself. I don't condone what he did. It's a serious situation and unpleasant.
"He does express regret and understands what he did was wrong."
As well as jailing Falconer for six years, Judge Paul Glenn also made him subject to a restraining order, preventing him from contacting his mother and going within 100 yards of her home.
