Golden boot not my priority, says Sserunkuma

Besides the title race, the fight for the golden boot in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) is also quite intense and with three matches to go.

Gor Mahia forward Dan Sserunkuma, who has so far scored 14 goals, is facing a big battle on his hands especially after Ulinzi forward Steven Waruru netted a hat-trick to send his tally to 10 at the weekend.

But Sserunkuma (pictured) insists his main focus is on helping Gor Mahia retain the title this year.

"It is great to be the leading scorer but for me the most important thing is helping Gor Mahia win the title. Two years ago, I scored many goals but it did not give us the title," he told FeverPitch in an interview.

Sserunkuma has also warned against premature celebration ahead of Sunday's match against Sofapaka in Machakos.

"Sofapaka are a good side who are also keen on winning the KPL title. We expect a tough match against them on Sunday and for this reason, we must all be at our best. It will not be an easy match and we need to maintain our focus all through.

Gor Mahia will have a hand on the title if they beat Sofapaka as they will move to 57 points on the log. Sofapaka, who are also in the final of the GOtv shield, are second on the KPL log after picking 50 points, setting the stage for a mouth-watering clash on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Kibera Black Stars hit Mbotela Kamaliza 2-0 in the second day of the Nairobi Provincial mini-league at City Stadium.

In another match, Forest Service and Supa Loaf fought to a barren draw. Liberty were the biggest winners, clobbering Inter-City 6-2 to keep alive their chances of winning the mini-league and make it to next year's division one league.

In the county league matches played at the same venue, Bomas of Kenya beat Kuwinda United 2-1, Kenafric stopped Kakauona 2-1 while Naivas were too good for Mutuini Rangers, winning 3-1.

The league continues today with teams eyeing a place in the final to be played this Saturday.
