Wayne Rooney frustrated after United's 5-3 defeat to Leicester City

Manchester United's ''undroppable'' skipper could only watch as his side collapsed to a shock 5-3 loss away at the Premier League new boys

Nice roof, shame about the foundations

As diamond geezer Wayne Rooney surveyed the wreckage of Manchester United’s startling collapse at Leicester, the shellshocked England captain admitted: “That wasn’t good enough.”

For the first time in 853 Premier League games, United lost after squandering a two-goal lead at the King Power, and comedians on Twitter - from Mario Balotelli to the wag who observed they should have signed Mark Clattenburg after releasing Howard Webb - have been having a field day.

Five games into Louis van Gaal’s reign, United have been forced to ditch his preferred formation of three at the back, and now there are big question marks over his alternative diamond shape in midfield.

After Van Gaal’s £150 million trolley dash in the transfer window, United’s collection of Gaalacticos is the most exotic assembly of forward talent anyone can remember.

But like the flawed genius of Ossie Ardiles’ armada of gunboats up front at Tottenham 20 years ago, United look painfully short of frigates to guard their own dockyard.

Rooney, who was not slow to distribute blame at the King Power after Esteban Cambiasso’s equaliser made it 3-3 in United’s shock 5-3 defeat, opted for collective responsibility in his post-match inquest.

He said: “We are all really disappointed, especially after going 3-1 up. We should have seen the game off and we should have kept the ball better, but we didn’t do that, we made a few mistakes and it has cost us.

“Leicester played a lot of long balls and we struggled a little bit (to cope) with those, but overall it wasn’t good enough as a team.

“We played some good stuff at times and scored some great goals, but we made too many mistakes and, as a team, we have to do better.

“We gave away a sloppy goal straight after we had scored our second - that lifted the crowd, but we have to do better. It’s bitterly disappointing that we didn’t.”
