Safaricom targets 10,000 connections in Mombasa County

Mombasa; Kenya: Safaricom has started connecting the public and commercial buildings in Mombasa to the fibre optic link. The telco has contracted Soliton Telmec to handle the job.

Soliton Telmec Group Chief Executive Abdirahman Sheikh said in Mombasa that the connections were part of a pilot programme designed to net more customers to brodaband services.

Safaricom had in 2013 launched the High Quality Digital City Project in Nairobi after laying the 600-kiloemtres fibre cable in capital city and its environs covering Rongai, Kitengela, Ngong Kiambu, Ruiru and Athi River.

“In Mombasa County alone, we are talking of 320 km of backborne of fibre optic cable that has already been laid with the intention being to connect government buildings and other commercial buildings for free,’’ said Sheikh.

Already, 100 youths have been recruited to sensitise the public in Mombasa County to sign up and be connected to the Safaricom Digital City’s Fibre to the Building Project. “We will be targeting as many buildings as possible. We will start off in Nairobi before rolling out to the other towns as we expand the reach of our quality metro-fibre,” Soliton Telmec General Manager, Sales and Marketing Manager Wycliffe Eshiwani, said.

Sheikh said the youths who attended the one-day training will form the core team of client recruiters. ‘’In Mombasa alone, we expect to have 10,000 clients fully connected by the end of the year. Already in the roll out stages, we have response from the public,’’ he said.
